Delhi Rises to Dangerous Haze Following Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the city registered an pollution measurement over 500, which equals ten times the safe level recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, readings of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly pollution that covers the city as colder weather begins.

Nevertheless recently, the newly elected city government appealed to the supreme court to request a modification of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Decision and Enforcement

To the disappointment of medical and ecological advocates, the court agreed to the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Many monitoring devices throughout the capital registered air quality spiking around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings recorded during the festival in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Implications

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on contaminants originating in across the border following the festivities.

Persistent Environmental Problem

The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Near Diwali, the amount of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the peak records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

The situation in Delhi is attributed to a mix of various sources including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating dangerous pollution that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as cooler air sets in.

Health and Financial Consequences

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to numerous research.

This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can even lead to cancer.

The pollution is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k untimely mortalities per year in Delhi.
