This winter transfer window is always a period of feverish speculation and possible major transfers. Several prominent footballers are being connected to transfers out of their current clubs. We examine a selection of the top names who could be on the move in January.

A. Semenyo

Although Ghana's failure to reach the AFCON, this has kept the forward in contention, reports suggest a major move is close. The Bournemouth attacker has a deal with a sizeable release clause active for a short period in early January. Recent developments indicate the Premier League champions have emerged as his signature. Former interested parties like Chelsea and Tottenham are said to have moved on to other targets, potentially opening the door for teams like Liverpool or Manchester United to make a last-minute bid.

With his contract set to expire in the close season, this represents the London club's final opportunity to obtain a transfer fee for their captain. Now just twenty-eight, and with his agreement ending in the summer, he represents a possible opportunity. Clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with the former Wolves man. Additionally, there have been suggestions from Spain that he is prepared to take a reduced salary for a switch to the Spanish giants.

Marc-André ter Stegen

The veteran German shot-stopper is now as the third option at Barça following new manager Flick. After fallen out of favour and undergone surgery, a winter exit seems increasingly likely. Villa were once linked as a possible suitor, but that option now appears off. Instead, interest from Saudi Arabia and Turkey are reportedly showing curiosity in the keeper.

I. Toney

The proven England striker has kept finding the net regularly in Saudi Arabia. Coming back to the Premier League might boost his dwindling hopes of being in the national squad. But, arranging a transfer presents major hurdles. His current club are reluctant to sell him, and his alleged huge weekly wages render any agreement complicated. Tottenham, Manchester United, and Everton are all linked as admirers.

Conor Gallagher

Although excelling and winning player of the tournament at the Under-21 European Championship last summer, the talented midfielder has found it tough for game time during his loan spell at Villa. Unai Emery has stated the temporary transfer will not become permanent. K. Yildiz

The highly-rated Turkey attacker is in excellent form for Juventus this term. As his existing contract nearing its end, many English sides – including Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham – are monitoring the developments. The Turin club are desperate to secure the youngster to a lengthy contract but face a battle to retain one of Europe's most promising prospects.

Kees Smit

This much-admired Dutch midfielder has earned comparisons to a Belgian superstar for his style of play. Following starring at the U19 Euros, Smit has broken into the AZ side. The teenager is heavily tipped to complete a major move this month. Newcastle reportedly are leading the chase, but are facing stiff rivalry from the Spanish champions for a signing priced at approximately twenty-two million pounds.
